Mother’s Day – She Wants More Than Flowers

Mother’s Day – She Wants More Than Flowers

Of course she’s gonna love the flowers.

But there’s something else she’d much rather have this Mother’s Day.

More than a quick phone call or an email. More than a special lunch, a box of chocolates or bunch of flowers. More even, than a surprise visit.

Much more …

Of course we all know what a hard gig it is being a mother. Hmm. I wonder …

Do we really  understand the sacrifice and the pain? From childbirth, through the sleepless nights and on to our rebellious and insolent teenage years … and then that fateful day we moved out of home? And it doesn’t end there. All our lives, our mothers feel our pain. They live through every bump and bruise with us, in their hearts.

Here’s a short story about a mother’s pain.

It may well be familiar to you. But as you read it this time, put yourself in the mother’s shoes. And once it’s touched your heart, I’ll share with you how you might touch your mother’s heart in a very special way this Mother’s Day.

And that is what the soldiers did. Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.”

And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home. After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), “I am thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (John 19:25-30)

Have you ever told your mother that finally, finally you’re beginning to understand what she went through to bring you into this world? What she went through to bring you up in this world? Have you ever told her that, from the bottom of your heart, you so deeply appreciate all that she’s suffered, all that she’s still going through, for you?

If you haven’t, then tell her this Mother’s Day.  It’ll mean more to her than all the flowers and chocolates that money can buy.

And if telling her isn’t a possibility, if she’s not around anymore, then tell Jesus. Thank Him.

I guarantee you … He’ll understand.

  1. Hi Berni and everyone reading this. May the love of the Father shower you with his unfailing love like confetti from his hand blessing this very day. We in GB have already celbrated Mother’s day. Being a mother myself I appreciate what my mother went through on our behalf. In March this year Mother’s day wa even more amazing as it is a tripple celebration, my mother, myself and my daughter. All mums!
The mother’s heart is a reflection of our Father’s heart. It’s the hardenst job in the world and is a 24/7 comitment. We as mum’s take on our childrens’ burdens as well as our own and only the Father sees our secret tears and hears our secret prayers when like Hannah some of us have had to go through agonising ordeals in relation to our children or not being able to have children. Lets spare a thought for those who grieve for the unborn child, the death of a child and especially those who sruggle because they had an abortion or were forced to have them adopted or put into care.

  2. Great testimony Steve. God is faithful!
    Thank you.

  3. Like it Berni, thank you. God gave me the privilege of leading my mum to Jesus a few years before she died and He gave me a wonderful assurance of her being with Him on the day of the funeral. That assurance was an answer to a prayer of many, many years previously for that assurance! Apart from anything else, no mum, no dad, no me!! Yes Jesus, thank you for my mum and her precious love.

I'd love to know what you think ...
